Beware lest any man spoil you (plunder you or take you captive) through philosophy and vain (empty) deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments (basic principles) of the world, and not after Christ. Colossians 2:8

Now, “Beware” is a strong warning that should put us on guard with great concern. Paul here, was warning the church at Colosse against false teachers, doctrines, and traditions because they steal the deep relationship with Christ away from us.

Some time ago, zoo officials in Kirby, Misperton, England, had to pay visitors for articles stolen by monkeys. But what puzzled them was the favorite item the animals snatched: Eyeglasses. An investigation revealed the reason. The monkeys grabbed the glasses when visitors leaned over to read a small sign on the wall of the cage. The sign said: “Beware! These monkeys steal spectacles.” Amazing how such a small innocent thing as a sign meant to help people, actually lured them into being unintentionally deceived.

Sometimes we can’t see the signs until we are too far into the cage to realize our vision or glasses have been stolen. When we go for a walk, we should always be mindful of our surroundings and guard our belongings. The same with our walk with Jesus. Because the world can so easily lead us away with all their traditions, ideas, and philosophies if we’re not careful; to where we are less concerned with what Jesus says. That’s why it’s so important to use Jesus as our measuring stick in which all things should be measured. If what we hear doesn’t line up with the word of God, don’t let it lead us away from Christ. Beware! Don’t let our prized possession be stolen.
