Giving of His Word

He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.

Romans 4:20-21 NKJV

The verses above are in reference to Abraham. God had promised, “that he would be heir of the world” (Rom. 4:13). That he would be a father to many nations. Exceedingly fruitful. Kings and nations would come from him. (Gen.17). That is a lot to consider being that he and Sarah were both dead in their bodies from child bearing, and for a long time. So Abraham had to take God at His Word.

That used to be a common saying when I was growing up. To take someone at their word. It was basically a sealed deal. It had more substance than any legal document because the character and integrity of both parties involved were at stake. Honor stood behind the word. But if the one giving their word defaulted, it would bring great shame to them and everyone connected to them.

Among the things we can give and still keep is our word.

Giving your word used to hold a lot of weight too. Now it just seems almost as a suggestion or a good wish. It really takes a lot of faith to take someone at their word unless you really know them well. Nowadays if someone gives their word on something we seem almost surprised if they come through. Yes, we and people are all fallible, but God is not. God promised Abraham what seemed impossible. But he knew God and His character. Abraham, “who, contrary to hope, in hope believed” (Rom. 4:18 NKJV).

God might have some big promises for us, or we may just be going through some hard times. But in His Word there are promises for every one of His followers. He promises strength, joy, peace, salvation, forgiveness of sins, healing, deliverance…. and the list goes on. We may experience them immediately, or it might come later. But regardless of when they are coming, they are coming. God gives us His Word and we must not waver in unbelief. But strengthen our faith and be fully convinced that what He promises, He is also able to perform.

Blessings!
